Hair loss solutions - hair transplants - types inc. pros and cons

Baldness is the number one aesthetic problem among men, it is not surprising since 30% of all men over 40 are more or less affected by hair loss. The fall is caused because hair follicles or roots are too sensitive to male hormones.

However, all the hairs on a man’s head do not have the same sensitivity. That is why hair does not fall evenly and some areas usual at the sides and back of the head may never suffer hair loss.

New molecules initiate a "pushes" transitional hair in women (minoxidil 2%-cyproterone acetate) or in men (minoxidil 5%-finasteride).

However, progress and diversity of surgical techniques of the scalp can reconstruct and help with definitive aesthetic improvements of the bald or sparsely covered areas. The technique most often used is the transplantation of mini and micro-grafts. This process is pretty simple and reliable, an is performed under local anesthesthetic, density with a natural “filling in” can be achieved regardless of sex, age or ethnicity.

Micro-grafts are performed under local anaesthetic, without the use of needles. This first step is the only one where the patient may feel a slight discomfort; the procedure takes only 5 to 10 minutes.

The doctor takes two to six tiny strips of hair; these strips are then cut into small pieces so-called micro-grafts. The grafts are inserted inside tiny cracks or holes on the recipients scalp. The transplant can place 2500 to 3000 hairs per session onto bald or balding areas; this hair transplant can last from 3 to 4 hours.

The techniques currently used in micro-grafts have led to procedures of more sophisticated transplants in what are known as follicular units. This is almost hair by hair transplantation.

The aesthetic results are very satisfactory and have nothing to do with the vagaries of transplants that took place years ago.

Another process is to take a long strip of 15 to 18 cm wide by 3 cm that include the whole hair, every part of the follicle. This is the only procedure that allows a single operation to provide a high density of hair in the frontal region. But the flap technique involves in some risks that must be explained by your surgeon. The intervention is done under local anaesthesia, but a few days may be necessary before resuming work.

The lifting of the scalp principle of intervention is a technique that combines heaviest surgical intervention at the same time operating a reduction of baldness with one or two flaps to cover the frontal region. Such a process can cover some major cavities in only a two-step procedure. It is most often performed under general anaesthesia and requires as a rule a recuperation period from 8 to 10 days.

A preoperative consultation will aim to ensure the absence of any disease or other physical problem and your psychological profile. The practitioner must establish with you the form of the location and type of intervention. The consultation also allows you to ask questions and get answers that are concrete and personal for your case.
